Dance Styles Explained
Ballet Technique/Repertoire:
Ballet is the base for all dance, if you have good ballet technique then all other styles of dance will come more naturally to you. The class will incorporate ballet technique and exercises, but will concentrate on learning repertoire from different ballets to give the students the opportunity to be free and dance, giving the older students the chance express themselves within the ballet movements. Pointe work is also included for some students.
Jazz/Modern:
Combination of technique which include, quick turns, kicks, isolations, corner work, big leaps, fancy foot work and learning routines from West End/Broadway Musicals, Glee, High School Musical, Modern Pop. Become more flexible with the soft flowing technique to elongate those limbs, not too mention lots of jazz hands and cheesy smiles.
Hip Hop/Street Dance:
This style of dance is energetic, physical and demanding on the body. It is a combination of all the funky music videos that are around today and the old school hip hop which has been with us forever, which includes, locking/popping, breaking, krumping, funk and of course MJ style. FSD’s hip hop has its own flavour and individuality and encourages the students to be more confident when dancing. Anyone can be a street dancer in time with determination, passion, hard work and belief. It will for sure improve your fitness and you’ll have fun in the process.
Adult Dance Fitness:
Dance classes for adults is a mix of aerobic, jazz, street dance and latin. It is a high powered and energetic class. A great way to burn calories and have fun in the process. There is a floor section to work those abs, please remember to bring a long a matt if you require one. Dance is one of the best forms of exercise where you can let go and shake it all out, its your hour of fun where you should concentrate on you and know one else, so forget about the kids and domestic chores and smile your way to a fat burning dance work out. The stretch class is a combination of Yoga/ Pilates and dance stretches.
Teeny Sugar Plum Ballet:
This is for little children that are just starting out in the dancing world. It is full of fun with the added bonus of a little technique and to encourage music, rhythm and dance into the younger generation, to let them be little fairies/drummer boys and dance to classical music.
Sugar Plum Funky Jazz:
This class is for those who want to star jump, leap and turn. It's a fun energetic class full of modern music to encourage rhythm, flexibility and a good understanding of jazz modern technique.
Tap:
Tap is a rhythmic based style of dance, which includes syncopation, twists, turns and tempos. Tap is fun, noisy, and at Flipside we concentrate on the performance side of tap incorporating the American feel.
Contemporary/Lyrical:
This class incorporates Graham and Cunningham technique, which will help with core stability. The class also adds in a little Pilates and Yoga. Music used is modern music with a twist with a lyrical feel.
